Family Math Core Competencies

The Family Math Core Competencies articulate a shared vision for strengthening family engagement in mathematics by centering joy, relationships, culture, and everyday life. Grounded in research and developed through a collaborative, practitioner-informed process, the Family Math Core Competencies recognize that math is already happening in families and communities and that educators, family-facing professionals, and systems play a critical role in honoring, expanding, and connecting that learning. The Family Math Core Competencies offer a common language and set of guiding principles for promoting inclusive and meaningful family math experiences across schools, early childhood settings, community organizations, and informal learning spaces.

Organized around four interconnected domains—Reflect, Connect, Collaborate, and Lead—the Family Math Core Competencies describe the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and practices needed to partner authentically with families around mathematics. They are designed to support reflection and professional learning, guide program and resource design, and strengthen systems that elevate families as essential partners in children’s mathematical development. Whether you are a teacher, school leader, professional developer, community-based organization, or parent leader, this document provides a practical and aspirational roadmap for building family math efforts that are joyful, culturally grounded, and responsive to the strengths of every family.
